TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Analysts said on Wednesday there was no \u201cbreakthrough\u201d in China\u2019s uranium reprocessing capabilities, and there would be no impact on the market for the fuel.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bottom line is there was no breakthrough, there will be zero impact on Chinese demand for uranium,\u201d UxC senior vice president Mike Smith stated in an interview.<\/p>\n
This came after China Central Television reported on Tuesday that technology developed by China National Nuclear Corp could extend the country\u2019s uranium resources to last 3 000 years.<\/p>\n
China Daily \u2013 the State-owned paper targeted at Westerners \u2013 said the following day in a front page headline that the move would solve the country\u2019s uranium shortage.<\/p>\n
Dundee Securities analyst David Talbot was equally sceptical.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don’t put a lot of credence into this spin about a Chinese breakthrough,\u201d he said in a January 5 note titled \u201cChina’s uranium reprocessing hype\u201d.<\/p>\n
